It is a part of our mission to be a centre of excellence for the training of future generations of health care professionals.
Family Medicine Residency Program
The Thamesview Family Health Team is a teaching site for the Family Medicine Residency Program at University of Western Ontario, Schulich School of Medicine.
This is a new program designed by community Family Physicians with the practice goal of comprehensive Family Medicine in mind. The preceptors are highly involved in hospital work in this community as Most Responsible Physicians for 65 Medicine patients, 60 Rehab and Continuing Care patients, Intrapartum Obstetrical Care with shared on-call for GP Obstetrics, and coverage as CCFP / CCFP EM for a busy Emergency Department in a 300-bed Community Hospital.
The curriculum in Chatham-Kent is a hybrid curriculum that combines a rotation-based curriculum in PGY1 and a horizontal curriculum in PGY2. This design is to allow residents to optimally experience being a family physician in their PGY2 year where he/she will comprehensively care for his/her own practice while allowing for continued enrichment experiences via longitudinal electives. Residents are expected to live in Chatham-Kent in their PGY1 & PGY2 year.
Southwestern Ontario Medical Education Network (SWOMEN)
Many medical learners (students and residents) have the opportunity to learn from one of our eight physician preceptors. SWOMEN is an established partnership between 40 communities throughout Southwestern Ontario, including Chatham-Kent. SWOMEN provides rural regional education and training experience for undergraduate and postgraduate learners from the University of Western Ontario in the Schulich School of Medicine.
Students and residents who do not attend UWO and wish to complete a rotation with Thamesview can register, through application, with the visiting student program at SWOMEN. Funding for medical learners is provided by SWOMEN through the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care (MOHLTC). Please note that not all rotation are funded and funding eligibility is determined by SWOMEN, not Thamesview. For more information, visit www.swomen.ca.
