Training Centre

It is a part of our mission to be a centre of excellence for the training of future generations of health care professionals.

It’s important for patients to understand that Thamesview Family Health Team is a teaching site for new family doctors. We provide a variety of learning experiences for them and we may select your appointment to be slotted in with a resident. Rest assured, resident family doctors are highly trained and together, we will provide you and your family with the best care possible. Thank you for helping us to train.

For those seeking a learning experience, we offer many different opportunities:

Family Medicine Residency Program

The Thamesview Family Health Team is a teaching site for the Family Medicine Residency Program at Western University, Schulich School of Medicine. This is a program designed by a community of family physicians with the practice goal of comprehensive family medicine in mind. The preceptors are highly involved in hospital work in this community as most responsible physicians for medicine patients, Rehab and Continuing Care patients, intrapartum obstetric care with shared on-call for GP obstetrics, and coverage as CCFP / CCFP EM for a busy emergency department in a 300-bed community hospital.

The curriculum in Chatham-Kent is a hybrid curriculum that combines a rotation-based curriculum in PGY1 and a horizontal curriculum in PGY2. This design is to allow residents to optimally experience being a family physician in their PGY2 year where they will comprehensively care for their own practice while allowing for continued enrichment experiences via longitudinal electives. Residents are expected to live in Chatham-Kent.

Distributed Education, Schulich School of Medicine

Distributed Education is an established partnership, provides rural regional education and training experience for undergraduate and postgraduate learners from the Schulich School of Medicine at Western University. Students and residents who do not attend Western University and wish to complete a rotation with Thamesview can apply through the visiting student program. Funding for medical learners is provided by Distributed Education through the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care (MOHLTC). Please note that not all rotations are funded and funding eligibility is determined by Schulich, not Thamesview. For more information, visit http://www.schulich.uwo.ca/distributededucation/

Nurse Practitioner Student Clinical Placements

We are able to provide placement opportunities for students in a nurse practitioner program. During this placement, the student will encounter patients of all ages, deal with both episodic and chronic conditions and have the opportunity to work within an interdisciplinary team. If you are interested in a placement opportunity, please contact the clinical placement coordinator at the University you are enrolled in.

Other Training Opportunities for Healthcare Professionals

We provide a training environment for other health care professions such as medical reception, pharmacy, social work, dietetics, occupational therapy, and nursing. If you would like to find out how you can set up a learning experience with Thamesview, please contact the Executive Director at 519-354-0070 ext. 600 with your request.
